Target problem

Over 60% of rural India suffers from the lack of safe and reliable access to energy. As a result, rural households use unclean energy sources like kerosene, that create indoor pollution. One out of every three women suffers from exposure to household air pollution.

Frontier Markets responds to the market failure to provide rural BOP villagers in India with access, training, and servicing for clean-energy products. Frontier Markets offers a unique distribution model as part of its inclusive business commitment, partnering with local entrepreneurs who sell clean-energy products under the brand name ‘Saral Jeevan. FM trains women to sell clean energy solutions like solar lighting and cooking stoves to existing and prospective customers. These trained women (Saral Jeevan Sakhis) address electricity challenges within their respective communities by promoting alternative energy products. Additionally, they’re able to earn an income through selling and repairing products.
